Rad Releases ’14- Already Dead Tapes & Records

December 28, 2014

As the countdown to the end of 2014 quickly approaches we take a personal look back on familiar names, features and musicians’ best releases of the past 12 months. Circuit Sweet will be featuring the featured artists of the site with their personal top 5 releases of the year.

In our end of year special we let our favorites take over the site to tell us the records that have made their end of year lists, their favorite events/gigs and what we can look forward to from them next year.

The next label take over comes from one we adore. Already Dead Tapes & Records are a brilliant label gaining quite a reputation for the amount of incredible records they are releasing, their aim is to produce and distribute small editions of tape and vinyl. The roots of the label were established from musicians using non-traditional methods to craft sound as art. As a niche tape & art label Already Dead places high regard on projects of an experimental nature. Already Dead Tapes have a vast and delectable collection of releases as the label are currently working on the grounds of trying to release at best one album a week. Pretty Impressive. We are delighted to hand over to Joshua Tabbia to find out more about his most loved label records of the year and why…

Top 5 releases of the year

1. The New Diet – ‘Basement Minded Thoughts’ cassette

Everyone at Already Dead is obsessed with the New Diet, they’re the quintessential ADT band. We were honored to release their debut album.

2. Marcus Rubio – ‘Land of Disenfranchisement’ cassette

Myspace named this album one of the best cassettes of 2014 and with good reason. Another favorite among ADT staff.

3. Coin Locker Kid – ‘Traumnovelle’ cassette

We’ve always wanted to delve into hip-hop, and Coin Locker Kid delivered the goods this year with his off-the-wall, experimental take on the genre.

4. Problems That Fix Themselves – ‘Which is Worse’ 12″ vinyl LP

This album was a milestone for ADT, both because it’s our 150th release and because PTFT was one the initial building blocks of the label. We spent two years writing and recording ‘Which is Worse’ and we’re extremely proud of the final product.

5. Lore City – ‘Kill Your Dreams’ 12″ vinyl LP

It’s been an honor working with this duo and releasing both their debut and sophomore efforts. ‘Kill Your Dreams’ is a natural progression from the band’s debut and sounds amazing on wax.

6. (bonus!) Mu Vonz – ‘Lub Dub’ cassette

Just an incredible album. Minimal, yet sophisticated hip-hop by way of Oakland, CA.

The best gig you have attended

Already Dead Family Reunion 4, duh! Amazing time over 4 days with 30 bands that are either on or friends of the label. We also closed out this year by partnering with the Alamo Drafthouse to score the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

Label Highlights of the year

37 cassette releases + 4 vinyl releases + 2 book releases = 43 releases this year!

Artist/Band to watch for 2015

Coin Locker Kid, Marcus Rubio, Yeesh

Plans for the New Year

Keep on doing our thing, tons of new cassette releases and several vinyl planned!

We can’t thank Joshua enough, Already Dead Tapes & Records are a label we urge you all to support, we can only wish the label more success in the new year.
