Thus Owls unveil video for ‘Ropes’‏

November 14, 2014

In Thus Owls’ new music video for “Ropes” from their album ‘Turning Rocks’ (Secret City Records), director Mylene Simard creates a nebulous, surreal world where fish-headed creatures made of scales, tentacles, teeth and fur amble through lush natural landscapes under a dense fog of swirling colors.

It’s a perfect visual counterpart to Thus Owls’ dynamic sound, which NPR Music’s Bob Boilen described as a combination of “strong voice and mystery,” and Wall Street Journal critic Jim Fusilli said would “flow nicely” in “a playlist that included its recordings along with those by Björk, Joanna Newsom, Sigur Rós, and some guitar-based free jazz.”

Based in Montreal, originated in Sweden, Thus Owls are the husband-and-wife duo of Erika and Simon Angell. A transatlantic sonic experiment in tone and color, ‘Turning Rocks’ was recorded in Montreal and is lyrically inspired by stories from Erika’s childhood home, a tiny village on the Swedish island of Orust.

“Simon and Erika are incredible collaborators, always willing to endure all forms of torture and discomfort in the name of weird video art,” says Simard. “We wanted to tell a story through the video that was fantastical and murky, about creatures or monsters forced to separate in some sort of magical forest, set off on their own path, reluctantly and painfully. We wanted to make a beautiful fairy tale video, with elements of horror and psychedelia. The final result is strange and dream-like, and I hope viewers come out of watching it with their own interpretation.”
