Circuit Sweet will be featuring the featured artists of the site with their personal top 5 releases of the year.

The past 12 months truly has been an incredible year for releases, hard to follow last year in the records produced but this year has uncovered exceptional talent- most of which discovered, promoted and featured right here on this site.

In our end of year special we let our favorites take over the site to tell us the records that have made their end of year lists, their favorite events/gigs and what we can look forward to from them next year.

Continuing our Rad Releases are good friends and talented trio Pipedream. Tom, BT (Josh) and Harry comprise the outfit which are influenced by 90′s emo with a bit of Jawbreaker and Mock Orange within that influential mix. Together they provide captivating hooks and a dirty deliverance, true to their 90′s prominence. This year the band released their new EP ‘New Colours’ which received a great reception. So great that label What We Should Be Doing released the EP on tape format of which is now sold out! Pipedream are a fantastic outfit with the world at their feet. Towards the end of this year the band had to put their music on hold whilst drummer Harry recovered from a serious accident and we all held our breathe for a positive outcome. We are delighted that Harry is back on his feet and behind the kit of Pipedream and for the next year all we can wish for is the best health possible and then some more music please. We are delighted to let the trio take over the site to tell us the records that made their past 12 months.

Rad releases 2013
Pipedream Joint favourites
Intersections – Into it over it

Evan was on the first one of these that we did when he released proper. He’s on it this year again as we all really got into intersections when it got released. Its definitely a move forward for his sound but not too far removed from earlier records and still keeps all the memorable lyrics and riffs that made us love IIOI in the first place.

Joint favourites – L’Ami du Peuple -Owen

I think it’s pretty much a well-known fact that there’s a lot of love for Owen in the UK and a lot of people were looking forward to this. There definitely wasn’t any disappointment from us as we all really enjoyed this record. Everything that Mike Kinsella is a part of seems to be excellent and this is just another testament to that. Some people might have been skeptical due to the extra instruments making it sound more “full band” but more elements can only be a good thing surely?

Harry’s pick – Listing your problems with no intent to solve them – Healing powers
a3005063949_2“For me, Healing Power’s EP, “Listing your problems with no intent to solve them,” has been one of my favourite and most listened to releases of 2013. Personally, I find Healing Powers to stand out more amongst so many other newer bands emerging. The music seems honest, not as if they’re trying to pretend or emulate. The release is just a three track, but every song is as good as the next and each track stands out. A case of quality over quantity I guess. Good band.”

Tom’s pick – Morning phase – Beck

beck-morning_phase-2014I struggled to find definitive favourite record of 2013. The new Owen record is great and She & Him’s “Volume 3” is definitely a nice one but it hasn’t been the most exciting year for new releases in my case. I am really, really looking forward to Beck’s 2014 album, it’s called “Morning Phase” and it’s going to be amazing. He’s released three tracks from it this year “Gimme”, “I Won’t Be Long” and “Defriended”, they’re all insane, go find them on YouTube, Beck is the man.

Josh’s pick – Whatever – Nai harvest

I first heard this band when they were on a comp with us. This record is an excellent balance of 90s emo and college rock. There’s also some really great lyrics and is pretty energetic which translates really well when you see them play live. We’re lucky enough to have played some shows with these guys and consider them mates. I think they’re going to have a pretty big 2014 so if people haven’t already got an eye on them then they definitely should now.

Best show attended We didn’t really go to a lot of shows this year, none where all 3 of us did anyway. Tom went to see wild nothing in Birmingham that he told us was a really cool show. Josh went to watch football etc and plaids in London, which was a matinee show for braid in the garage, which he also went to.

Best show played We find it really hard to pick one as we’ve played with so many awesome bands and awesome shows this year. We’ve picked 2 for different reasons. The first being the Midwest west midlands all-dayer. This was such an awesome day. Meeting Internet buddies for the first time, Stunning weather, Loads of bands, Loads of friends and it was just really nice to play to a load of people who were really into it. The other show would be our most recent with Owen. This was our first show with harry back after his accident so it was pretty emotional but loads of our friends came as well to give harry a welcome back as well as people who turned up just to see Owen but were kind enough to watch us.

2014 plans

Though we’re never 100% certain on what we’re going to do for the year we have been thinking about it. Tom has started writing tracks that are hopefully going to end up becoming our first full-length record. We don’t have any idea of when it’ll be recorded or released but who knows. Maybe if we’re lucky it’ll be ready to go before I type the next one of these. We’ve also been asked to do a split with a band from New York called Tilde who are a great band. They remind us of tigers jaw, which is never a bad thing. Again no release date on that one but it should hopefully be coming out as a 7 inch sometime soon. There are also talks of other splits that we may or may not be a part of but not enough to reveal anything yet. We’re hoping to get a tour under our belts this year with some friends as well as hopefully doing a weekender or 2. Maybe with our favourite new band deadlines. Outside of that just more merch, more shows and just keep doing what we do J. Also a massive thanks to anyone who’s supported us this year, especially when we broke the new about Harry. If you shared a link or spread the word then we are forever grateful.

Thank you so much Pipedream- looking forward to hear more from you!!
