Rad Releases ’13- Edils Records

December 24, 2013

As the countdown to the end of 2013 quickly approaches we take a personal look back on familiar names, features and musicians’ best releases of the past 12 months. Circuit Sweet will be featuring the featured artists of the site with their personal top 5 releases of the year.

The past 12 months truly has been an incredible year for releases, hard to follow last year in the records produced but this year has uncovered exceptional talent- most of which discovered, promoted and featured right here on this site.

In our end of year special we let our favorites take over the site to tell us the records that have made their end of year lists, their favorite events/gigs and what we can look forward to from them next year.

Continuing our next Rad Releases is the fantastic guys at Edils Records. We spoke to Liverpool based duo James Dyke and one half of Go Heeled Philip Rourke on their rad releases of the year. EDILS have had an incredible year without a doubt having put out some incredible releases and establishing some talented acts. A DIY label who are directing their passion and love for music and bands’ to supporting them by providing a home to releases with the purpose of it being FOR the band. Getting them heard. The Liverpool based self determined duo behind EDiLS Recordings have the sole intention to release awesome music in awesome packaging! We love this label and we urge you all to support them, their artists and their efforts.

Top 5 releases of the year and a brief reason why (if a label these could be your own)

We’re not going to include any of our releases but the Keira Is You, Soft Arrows and Double Echo albums are awesome and you should check them out!

1 – Wymond Miles – Cut Yourself Free (Sacred Bones)

This only came out in October and it just blew me away. Its an album that I just had on repeat. There’s a real post punk feel to the record. Every song is great, a nice lo-fi production which really suits the songs and I love the sincerity of the lyrics. Perfect album

2 – Weekend – Jinx (Slumberland Records)

This was my favourite album until the Wymond Miles record came along. Again, great production that just sets the mood of the record. Really up beat yet dreamy and kind of noisy indierock songs. People who like Diiv will probably like Weekend. I prefer Weekend to Diiv personally.

3 – Minks – Tides End (Captured Tracks)

This is just a great pop album. Its really different from their debut album, which i wasn’t really into to be honest so this was a real nice surprise! Its full of cool electronic instruments and great hooks.

4 – Beach Fossils – Clash Of The Truth (Captured Tracks)

I was so excited for this record because I love their earlier releases. This is a real step up I found. The songs are a lot more edgier and full on compared to their much more chilled vibes of their earlier stuff. Its just great. Awesome production, real raw and i think it captures the band at their peak perfectly. I got this when I was on a European tour with Dignan Porch back in February, so each time I listen to this it takes me back to that time…That’s one of the best things about music really.

5 – Just Handshakes – Say It (Bleeding Gold records)
12 Jacket (3mm Spine) [GDOB-30H3-007}

Sadly the only UK band in my list, Its one of those records that reminds me of certain times and people that have been in my life and that’s why i love it. Great variety of tracks but essentially beautifully crafted indiepop songs. There’s a C86 vibe about it all I guess. They’re doing really well at the moment too and I think this will be on a few end of year lists.

The best gig you have played(or put on) this year and why

Songs For walter and Keira Is You really impressed me. Its great when you really like a bands records and they hold up live. I cant really pick one to be honest. Double Echo and Soft Arrows shows were great too!

The best gig you have attended and why

Favorite gig this year was Dignan Porch in Vienna, Austria

2014 plans

We’ve got 2 releases set for for the first quarter of 2014, we cant announce them just yet though!
We’re helping with a few tours and the plan is to release some more physical stuff too.

We are so thankful EDILS was part of our take over. This label is one of the best in the UK, they’ve got the right attitude, the right work mentality, they are dedicated and they know talent when they hear/see it. We can’t wait to see what the next year holds for the label and it’s acts.
