With the dust barely settled on 2013’s sell out event, the Psych Fest organizers are already gazing into the future.  GOAT will appear at the festival as part of ‘Transmissions From The Outer Realms’ a unique curation presented by Rocket Recordings, featuring the first ever UK shows for HILLS and LAY LLAMAS, plus appearances from TEETH OF THE SEA, ANTHROPROPHH and GNOD.
The festival was lauded in 2013 for its unique take on a thoroughly modern psychedelic condition.  THE GUARDIAN declared “Liverpool, the great psychedelic capital of Europe”, as the festival established itself as a firm fixture in the cultural calendar, simultaneously providing the most progressive line-up and inclusive audience on the festival landscape.

Notes on the line-up:
Sweden’s GOAT appeared out of nowhere in 2012 with their debut album World Music. The record was quickly heralded as one of the albums of the year, if not the decade thus far. Their rare, shamanic live shows, with a heady mix of afro, psych, funk, kraut and space rock have already become legendary amongst the people who have been lucky enough to bear witness. Their performance at Liverpool International Festival Of Psychedelia will coincide with the release of their second LP, so expect something very special.
‘Transmissions From The Outer Realms’ is a unique curation presented by Rocket Recordings.Including HILLS – this will be the iconic Gothenburg group’s first performance outside Scandinavia – and new Italian label signing LAY LLAMAS, who ply a “Goat meets Gnod” brand of afro repetition, shoegaze fuzz and DFA-esque grooves. The aforementioned GNOD play trance-inducing commune drone, full on fuzz-driven post-punk and danceable kraut noise repetition. The band have quickly become known as one of the best live bands in the UK and are joined on the bill by cinematic audioists TEETH OF THE SEA, whose mix of kraut rock, techno, psych, disco and noise can be heard best on their recently released and critically acclaimed third album Master.
ANTHROPROPHH started off as a solo project by Paul Allen, the guitarist and principle songwriter for seminal cult psych rock band The Heads, but over the last 12 months has morphed into a full flung psych power trio. ‘Transmissions From The Outer Realms’ will feature each of the aforementioned bands alongside DJ collaborations – led by the ever-exploratory NOTHING IS DJs – a kaleidoscopic visual world and multitude of cosmic sins, to be revealed in due course.
For the uninitiated the Bristol/London based Rocket Recordings has been
releasing psych-infused outsider music since its unlikely inception in 1998. The label issued a double LP Crystallized just last month, to celebrate 15 years at the psych coal face.
Last year’s LP Rituels d’un Nouveau Monde, released on Versatile Records, saw ZOMBIE ZOMBIE chart a gorgeous voyage of electronic discovery, one the NME remarked of being laced with “creeping threat and otherworldliness”. Etienne Jaumet and Cosmic Neman where joined by the French electro-wizard Joakim behind the controls at his own Labyrinth studio in Paris for the LP and they bring their killer live reputation to this year’s Liverpool Psych Fest.
THE JANITORS are born of the woods of Stockholm, Sweden and give love to noise, monotony and pop songs, calling their own brand of dark psychedelia “evil shoegaze boogie woogie and stökpsych a-go-go”. The group’s track MSSG opened the recent Fuzz Club / Reverberation Appreciation Society, European Psych compilation, Reverb Conspiracy Vol II.
Fellow Stockholm group LES BIG BYRD blend poems of time-space continuum read through vocoders, cosmic clouds of filtered string machines, motorik krautrock drums, 12-string guitars and creamy moogs. They’ve played but a mere handful of hometown gigs and released a couple of extremely limited self-released vinyl 7 inches to date. But now it seems the year of the Byrd is here…following a studio-session with Anton Newcombe at his studio in Berlin, a full-length is now in its final stages.
VAADAT CHARIGIM are from Tel Aviv, Israel, and make gorgeous, brooding shoegaze. Their Burger Records debut LP The World Is Well Lost, opens with the stunning Odisea, of which Pitchfork remarked…”the message can be Babelfished, and the medium is seven minutes of phased guitars, tidal dynamics and post-punk monotone vocals—so there really is no language barrier if you’ve got an ear for what the dark grey moods this music is typically suggesting.”
SUDDEN DEATH OF STARS are from the medieval city of Rennes, France, which may explain why they sound like monks playing modern day Velvet Underground, Os Mutantes and Pentangle.  Formed in 2010, they were complete as a band when they happened upon the only sitarist west of Paris. Their sitar-heavy sound caught the ear of the Cornershop-run label Ample Play Records, who reissued their debut album in the summer of 2013 in the UK and the US. After a Christmas split 7″ with Ample Play label mate Beat Mark, they’re getting ready to release their 2nd album entitled All Unrevealed Parts of the Unknown in Spring 2014.
According to Italian group IN ZAIRE “if you’re looking for lysergic adventures this is your ticket!” and we certainly won’t be arguing with them. The band’s debut LP White Sun Black Sun was released early in 2013, with an über-limited white vinyl issued by the ever mind expanding Berlin imprint Sound Of Cobra. Deeply rooted in the ongoing history of electrified rock-n-roll-to-blow-your-head-off (i.e. from Ash Ra Temple and Hawkwind to Up-Tight), In Zaire reach way beyond this admirable approach taking cues from electric Blues, the aforementioned LSD-drenched psychedelia, high-octane Japrock and edgy post-punk.
UK via Sydney duo DARK BELLS, the Julian Cope-endorsed experimental noise group ONE UNIQUE SIGNAL and brilliant afro-kraut noodlers CANTALOUPE complete the first round of announcements.
