In Pictures: Castrovalva with Exit International Live @ Le Pub Newport

October 21, 2013

September 13th at Le Pub in Newport, a miserable evening outside with torrential rain enough to dampen anyone’s spirits- except for the bands and attendee’s at this venue. Inside one of the greatest venues in the UK- spirits were high and volume was loud!

We reported the news when CASTROVALVA & EXIT INTERNATIONAL teamed up again for a September UK tour.

In October 2012 Castrovalva returned with their new album ‘You’re not in Hell, You’re in Purgatory My Friend’ released through the recently closed Leeds label Brew (Nine Black Alps, Kong, Blacklisters, Humanfly). As with everything associated with this band the only thing you could ever expect was the unexpected.

This time the flirtations with hip-hop were gone and replaced with ideas and themes focused on things closer to home where the subjects of friends, family, fatherhood and broken relationships are all explored. But while lyrically at times this was a far more serious record the fun and excitement was still very much there with blaring synths very much at the forefront alongside those crushing but addictive bass-lines. So much so Kerrang claimed the band sounded ‘madder than a badger on stilts’ and awarded the album 4Ks while Rock Sound hailed them as ‘gloriously inventive, musically accomplished and truly unique’.

To support the release the band hit the road with label mates Nine Black Alps playing to sellout crowds in London and Manchester. In December Castrovalva rode out again, this time with brothers in noise Exit International on the ‘Zero Guitars Maximum Filth Tour’. They enjoyed it so much that they decided to do it all over again with September’s ‘Zero Guitars Maximum Filth Tour 2′.

We were very lucky to spend some time with this great band and good friends as part of their 14 date tour.

The evenings events were kicked off with support from Desalvo and Science Bastard before Castrovalva riled up the crowd. The venue was thriving and a real credit to all acts on the evenings bill, as the streets were empty and Manic Street Preachers were playing practically opposite. Each band contributed to the positive atmosphere that surrounded everyone and sustained a thoroughly enjoyable event. Castrovalva effortlessly beam from track to track, genre to genre. Thunderous bass lines, addictive and mesmerizing vocals and annihilating drum beats and rolls make for another alluring set. Having delivered to the crowd it was then Exit International who finished this evenings proceedings with a ferocious and hard hitting track. The trio engaged the crowd with sheer filth, stage dives and balls. Literally.
