Pelican have officially announced three UK shows as part of a larger European tour this summer.
The thunderous instrumental rock quartet now includes Dallas Thomas (Swan King) as the official fourth member. They will be drawing upon material from their most recent EP Ataraxia/Taraxis (Southern Lord), their 2009 full length What We All Come To Need (Southern Lord) and will be sharing some new material also.
Here are the dates:
Monday 15 July – Brighton, The Haunt
Tuesday 16 July – Leeds, Brudenell Social Club with JK Flesh
Wednesday 17 July – London, The Garage with JK Flesh
Pelican will be entering the studio soon to record new material, which gives us even more to look forward to this year.
With members now residing in separate cities, this EP represents a new chapter in the band’s evolution with a re-energized focus on composition and the utilization of the recording studio as a creative tool in the songwriting process, yielding one of the most diverse efforts in the band’s prolific discography.
The four new songs highlight the manifold sonic strengths of the band by delving into moments of triumphant melodic rock, smokey doom, ambient soundscape, acoustic desert-folk, and minimalist electronics. In contrast to the EP’s origin as the product of four different recording studios, including stints with engineers Sanford Parker (Twilight, Circle of Animals, Nachtmystium) and Aaron Harris (ISIS), the carefully crafted tracklisting boasts a cohesive narrative flow, lending the release an epic feel worthy of a full album.

Ataraxia/Taraxis reinstates Pelican at the top of the instrumental food chain, and if they continue like this, they show no sign of coming down.” – 8/10 DROWNED IN SOUND
A potent reminder of why we love them. Heavy, expansive guitar patterns form the two songs at the core of the EP…It’s the crunching doom of ‘Parasite Colony’ which is most impressive though, swaggering as it does with the vigour of a band still at the peak of their powers.” – 8/10 ROCKSOUND
They sounds as tight as powerful as ever here.” – ROCK A ROLLA
