As the countdown to the end of the year approaches we take a personal look back on our familiar names, features and musicians’ top releases of the past 12 months.
This year has stood out for incredible releases and even more so for uncovering exceptional talent; most of which discovered, promoted and featured right on this site.
Taking over the Rad Releases and with a new twist on the feature is an extraordinary band we introduced you to not that long ago- Dating Myself. This band comes with a story……a “Spinal Tap”-esque story.
Almost-were 90s bitch rock band, Dating Myself, have resurfaced after a 16 yeardisappearance into the “WTF happened to them?” file. Original members Laurda (guitar/vocals), Jessi* (bass) and J6en (drums), burst onto the West Coast grunge scene in ’95…well, as much as you can burst while on second stage Lollapalooza fame.
The girls claim they have been sent here by record mogul/amateur inventor/Mayan prophecy follower Doc Vig to record their first full length album and gather research on 2012′s futuristic trends before the end of days. Doc Vig offered the band a record deal in exchange for testing out his AWESOME Bill-and-Ted-inspired time machine. No way!? YES WAY!
After much confusion with new technology and a moment of silence for the passing of cassettes, CDs, and record stores, Dating Myself is staying true to their 90s sound. Prepare to have your long-johns blown off your memory-grapes and your even-flow disrupted…
Dating Myself are back. To us. Even though they sort of never realized they went anywhere.. However, they look back on their favourite releases of THEIR year.1996….
We are a band from 1996 therefore the Top 5 albums for us are from 1996, naturally. We can’t really remark on bands of 2012 because we haven’t been here for very long. These albums really struck a chord with us.
Who doesn’t like a good drill sample?
Sexy. I bet you have had sex to one of their songs.
Lou can break your heart and rock it into a pulp at the same time
Sleater-Kinney – Call the Doctor
Cause they are friends of ours and lady’s who rock out are #1 in our book. We are betting that they are going to be huge.
Unwound – Repetition
Best concert (pre-1996)
The Sundays @ The Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, BC on March 15, 1993.
Didn’t think it was possible, but Harriet Wheeler’s angelic voice can carry through the crowd and infect you with beauty unlike anything you have ever heard. Plus, there were some really cute girls in the crowd. 🙂
Best concert that we played in 2012.
So yes, we came here to 2012 from 1996, recorded an album and played a cassette release party on Nov 30th @ The Rickshaw in Vancouver, BC (I attached 2 live photos from that show). We played with some really talented bands such as Previous Tenants, One Life Animal and Hermetic. The crowd made us feel right at home by wearing what we consider normal in 1996; plaid, docs, toques, baby doll dresses and long johns. We played through our whole album and whipped sweat onto the audience and left a mark on the Vancouver scene.
We plan to head back to 1996 before the apocalypse to avoid any unnecessary heartache, AKA death. Plus our record label owner, Doc Vig, is expecting us. We may be back, just maybe. Keep an ear to the ground and your eyes on skies, our van time machine might just be spotted back to the future.
