OLYMPIANS – The Dictionary Single Feature

May 19, 2012

Olympians are a music band that started in a basement in Norwich around two years ago with a guitar, bass, some rums, and a song about the board-game Risk. Now equipped with another guitar, two keyboards, a glockenspiel, a trumpet and four bellowing voices, Olympians just keep on growing. Their sound has moved from twiddly guitar-pop to brass-infused synth-drenched megatunes, exploring everything from drones to barbershop harmonies along the way.

“Lighthearted and exciting…calamitous yet incredibly tight.” – Drowned in Sound

“Mathy pop music at its most glorious, hipshaking, best.” – The 405

The band are a few days away from releasing their Second Single in their Book Club Series titled ‘The Dictionary’ which is out this Monday (21st) on Barely Regal Records.

Following on from the release of the first single in their “Book Club” series in January (along with a wealth of exclusive bonus material last month) Norwich Power-Pop quartet Olympians have announced the next single to be released in the four part series, entitled “The Dictionary”.

Recorded with engineer David Pye (Wild Beasts, 2:54, Spring Offensive), the single will be released on Barely Regal Records on the 21st May 2012, and will be available digitally on iTunes, Spotify and Olympians’ Bandcamp page as a 3 track single with “The Dictionary”, plus b-side “Shell” and a remix of the first single in the series “The Great Gatsby” by Dan Tombs (the man behind Factory Floor’s live visuals). The release will also be available as a limited-edition run of CD singles, available to Book Club members and at shows on Olympians’ tour this May with Kutosis (see below for dates).

Experimenting with their expanded array of instrumentation, “The Dictionary” sees Olympians really flexing their musical muscles and testing the boundaries of their style. While the single still features the intricate guitar lines, interesting time signatures and math-rock influences that defined their sound previously, “The Dictionary” and “Shell” both see the band experimenting with dense layers of vocal harmonies and an increased emphasis on electronic elements and synths. Matt Fidler from Barely Regal Records stated “we started the Book Club in the first place as a means for Olympians to test ideas and release material in a more fluid manner in the build up to their first album release. It’s great to see already, only half way through the series, how much their sound is already evolving and changing.”

“The Dictionary” will be out on May 21st following Olympians’ tour with Kutosis, though current and new subscribers to the Book Club series (open for subscriptions on Olympians Bandcamp page) will get both the digital and CD version early, as well as a whole host of exclusive bonus content following the release.

The Book Club is a series of four singles released throughout 2012 all loosely held together with varying book related themes. All singles are released digitally on iTunes and in a series of CDs in limited edition handmade cases. Continuing their quest to produce physical formats worth paying money for, Olympians have also made the entire series available inside a hollowed out hardback book. Like a prison movie and a secret-treasure-box from your childhood all wrapped up in one it sits very nicely on your shelf, and also comes with a host of extra material, remixes and a limited edition poster.
