The Civil Wars are a raw and unique talent who’s heartbreakingly sparse and beautiful melodies sit perfectly with their two agonisingly restrained individual voices. With flavours of blues, folk, Americana, country and classic singer-songwriter their sound is firmly rooted in the gothic American South.

The band is an enigmatic duo comprised of California-to-Nashville transplant Joy Williams and her Alabaman partner, John Paul White. They are a huge DIY success in the USA having independently sold over 300,000 copies of the ‘Barton Hollow’ album already through touring and word of mouth. The album reached Number 1 on the iTunes chart in the US to widespread critical acclaim for their music and live shows. Their incredible year in the US has been rounded off by securing two Grammy nominations. The band will also be performing at the 2012 Grammy ceremony.

Now building an ever-expanding following in the UK, the band set the ‘Later with Jools’ studio alight recently with their debut UK TV performance of ‘Barton Hollow’ which can be seen here:

The stunning performance led to the band trending WORLDWIDE on Twitter immediately after the show and a huge surge in sales of the US import version of their album ‘Barton Hollow’, which rose to No 15 on the iTunes chart overnight subsequent to the broadcast. Following a sell-out Union Chapel performance in September the band return to the UK for a full tour in March 2012, including a headline show Shepherds Bush Empire on Monday 19th March.

Accompanied by dark and brooding visuals, the bands imagery continues the intimate conversations and understated sparks of the music. The haunting video for their debut UK single ‘Barton Hollow’ can be seen here:

Adele has personally chosen the band to support her on her recent US and UK tours and says ‘The Civil Wars are by far the BEST live band I have EVER seen.’
