Rad Releases ’11- Girl Scouts

December 21, 2011
As the countdown to the end of the year approaches we take a personal look back on our familiar names, features and musicians’ top releases of the past 12 months.

This year has stood out for incredible releases and even more so for uncovering exceptional talent; most of which discovered, promoted and featured right on this site.
Continuing our feature this week is Philadelphia’s Punk trio Girl Scouts.

Consisting of P.J Carroll, Tyler Minford and Logan Zoghby. Girl Scouts was originally a side project of their post-rock band, Pursuit (http://www.last.fm/music/Pursuit), which is currently on an indefinite hiatus.
With influences such as Algernon Cadwallader, Castevet and American Football to name a few; we first introduced Girl Scouts to the site back in November. And honestly- this is a band to watch. A band with incredible potential to go far and fil current empty voids as big named bands within the community are slowly dissappearing.
Girl Scouts have had a fufilling year; the band have released their 2011 demo ‘Thanksalot’ which you can download for free here http://www.mediafire.com/?ugps5852ht11c   and find streaming below via bandcamp.
The band have already gained a reputation for their live performance and have recently announced they have a split with Old Gray soon to be released on Carucage Records. A trio who over the next few months will become even more regular on our sire due to their rewarding efforts.
We were lucky enough to speak to P.J on behalf of Girl Scouts to find out their favourite releases of the year.
Girl Scouts Top Releases of the year:

Top 5 releases of 2011(in no particular order):

1.) Pianos Become the Teeth – The Lack Long After

Didn’t think anything they made could of surpassed Old Pride. Boy howdy we were wrong. Raw as fuck.

2.) Explosions in the Sky – Take Care, Take Care, Take Care

Before Girl Scouts, we were all in a post-rock band together and we still maintain that influence today. Really beautiful and intricate, and definatly a great album after a 4 year absence.
3.)Dads – Brush Your Teeth, Again 😉
Awesome dudes from Jersey. Really unique style and they’re sweaty. Rick Ross will cave and sign them any minute now. Definatly gonna try and organize some shows together soon!

4.)Wifebeater – Holding Stone
Best folky three-piece ever. Consists of Joe(upright bass) and Reba(acoustic guitar) from Code Orange Kids, and Kimi, everybody sings and its fucking awesome. Played a show with them at Maggot House in early November, really kind people. On a side note, get Code Orange Kids new 7″ Cycles. Equally as awesome.
5.) The Hundred Acre Woods – The Hundred Acre Woods EP
Our best friends. Such a solid ep all around, lyrically and instrumentally. Best songwriters we know, hands down.

Best Gig Girl Scouts have played:
The best show we played this year was on October 1st at a house in North Philly called The Burrow. It was the first show we played since we release our two song demo, and it was the first time out of all the bands that we’ve all been in that we recieved such an amazing reaction from the crowd. Between
60-80 people packed into a hot stuffy rowhome basement, everyone knew the words, everyone was having fun. It was unlike anything we’ve ever experienced before.
Best Gig attended of 2011:
The best show that we’ve been to this year was The Hundred Acre Woods EP release show at Maggot House in North Philly. We played with The Hundred Acre Woods, Mean Cat, Wifebeater, The Skin Cells and a suprise appearance by Little Kingdoms! Needless to say exposed lightbulbs were kicked out, blood was shed, tears were cried, and Pierce Jordan stole the show, DOS MANOS!
During 2012 we plan on supporting our split with Old Gray, which we’re releasing on Christmas Eve. As soon as P.J.’s right hand heals up and he regains full range of motion, we’re going to start playing shows again. Probably gonna record periodically throughout the year, we have some plans to release a cassette of our demo and two other songs on the b-side, and we are definatly touring this summer.

Thank You Girl Scouts and we can only wish you our support and good luck for next year, we look forward to featuring you more !
