Dean Wareham & Cheval Sombre
announce their “western dreampop” album,
Dean Wareham Vs. Cheval Sombre,
released October 26 via Double Feature Records

Dean Wareham (Galaxie 500, Luna) and Cheval Sombre are to release an upcoming “western dreampop” album entitled, Dean Wareham Vs. Cheval Sombreto be released October 26 via Double Feature Records.  Dean Wareham founded Galaxie 500 and Luna and has made 15 studio albums. One-man-band Cheval Sombre (Chris Porpora) hails from the Hudson River, NY. He has released two prior albums, produced by Sonic Boom with Dean & Britta and Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser of MGMT.

Dean and Chris recorded this album of western-themed songs at Palmetto Recordings in downtown Los Angeles with producer Jason Quever (Papercuts, Beach House), backed by a band including Britta Phillips (Luna, Dean & Britta), Anthony LaMarca (the War on Drugs) and Will Halsey (Sugarcandy Mountain).

Dean and Chris alternate lead vocals and song choices, Dean’s choices are largely drawn from Hollywood westerns while Chris chose songs by Blaze Foley, Townes Van Zandt, Bob Dylan and Stephen Merritt.

“The interesting thing about inspiration and influence,” says Dean Wareham, “it starts out I’m channeling Marty Robbins or Ricky Nelson but the end result is nothing like that, it might end up closer to Galaxie 500 or Joy Division. We’re not trying to be authentic, frankly I don’t really care for modern singers trying to do authentic Americana. To me this album is western-themed, or maybe western-dreampop — but it is not country or alt-country.”

“My friend Chris (Cheval Sombre) has a truly unique voice; like a stoner from another dimension, he takes other people’s songs and turns them into something better, every time.”
