OUTLANDS ANNOUNCE ARTIST-LED WORKSHOP SERIES ALONGSIDE MATANA ROBERTS & KELLY JAYNE JONES’ NEW LIVE COLLABORATION IN MAY
A new live initiative was recently launched in the UK, OUTLANDS which has grown out of a motivation to pool resources, build audiences, and support diverse, high-quality music, and the organisations that strive to promote it across the regions of the UK. The first tour that has been announced is a brand new collaboration between internationally renowned US composer, saxophonist, mixed-media practitioner, and sonic voyager Matana Roberts and British sound artist/improviser Kelly Jayne Jones.
Each OUTLANDS commission will feature interconnected workshops that will shine a light on the intriguing artistic processes and personalities involved in adventurous music forms, and encourage new audiences to experience this art form.
For the first tour, Kelly Jayne Jones will lead a series of group workshop sessions that explore improvisation as a means of building community, exploring mindfulness and enabling political expression sharing the methods, approaches and inspirations present within her sound making practice. Workshops are free to attend, with limited availability, and shall take place in every city in the OUTLANDS touring network. Dates can be found here: https://www.outlands.network/workshops/
Taking inspiration from John Zorn’s Game Pieces the workshops will take an experimental and collaborative approach to composition with participants drawing upon a range of objects, methods, activities and processes along with mindfulness techniques to consider what it is to create sound together. Exploring the spaces within and between improvisation and composition as a means of collective creative expression, workshop participants will engage in processes of communal creativity inspiring interpersonal transformation as a political act.
KELLY JAYNE JONES QUOTE:
“The workshops will interconnect with themes Matana Roberts and I are exploring; to tease out unconscious, interpersonal dynamics that exist within collaborative improvisation. As a group we will employ extended techniques, interplay and discourse within a safe, inclusive atmosphere for participants to explore individual and group dynamics, and personal expression within music making, and to form connections and nurture creative collaborations.”
Kelly Jayne Jones makes use of varying combinations of prepared recordings, text, rocks, found sounds and flute. Her work beckons a tussle with uncertainty, inviting exposure and vulnerability in performance, chasing experiences that open our chasms within, without restraint. Searching for humble principles of growth; physis; sound, connecting with others in the same space/ moment, customary experimental play, with threads and beads of improvisation and interactivity. Kelly has facilitated numerous workshops including Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, and Manchester’s Brighter Sound Libraries project with young adults.
