Circuit Sweet Interview, Feature, Reviews

Rad Releases ’17 – Static Masks

December 24, 2017

It’s that time once again, as the countdown to the end of 2017 rapidly approaches we take a personal look back on familiar names, features and musicians’ best releases of the past 12 months. In what has been a crazy year of highs and lows it’s the releases that have pulled a lot of people through the year. Now in it’s 7th year, Circuit Sweet will be hosting takeovers from the featured artists/musicians/labels and promoters of the site with their personal top 5 releases of the year.

Continuing our annual end of year tradition we let our favourites take over the site to tell us the records that have made their end of year lists, their favourite events/gigs and what we can look forward to from them next year.

Our next take-over comes from an act we’ve seen grow and develop over the years and an act we simply cherish. New Orleans based artist Patrick Bailey is hands down one of the hardest working musicians around and he’s teamed up with three other equally incredible and hardworking musicians to unite in Static Masks. Following a successful 2017 with the release of their triumphant album ‘Late Bloomer’ back in March, we handover to Static Masks to find out more about their year in music…

Top 5 releases of 2017

Cloakroom – Time Well
This is a big one within the band. It’s heavy, beautiful, sad, and masterfully produced. We’re glad this album exists.
Hoops – Routines
Every song on this album is great, so by default it’s one of the best. Such an enjoyable record.
Mogwai – Every Country’s Sun

A legendary band still making great music.
Vasudeva – No Clearance
This band was a new find this year. It’s an instrumental treat and on heavy rotation.
Dore Mear Beon – A Commending Paeon for the Forgotten Henrietta Swan Leavitt

This one is a monster. It’s skillfully technical and grooves in a way that makes it stand out amongst many great releases this year. Just stop what your doing and look for this album.

Best Show We Played

Opening for Balance and Composure on their stop in New Orleans was such cool show to be a part of and definitely a memorable one.

Best Gig attended

A bunch of us got to see some legends this year. Swervedriver, Radiohead, and At The Drive In were all cool to see. Swervedriver played 2 of their albums back to back in a small club. I’ve never thought I would get to see At The Drive In, and there were so many old friends there. It was like a reunion of sorts. Radiohead is Radiohead.

Highlights of the Year

Releasing our first album Late Bloomer.

There are always so many to name, but definitely check out Hand Out and The Fruit Machines. They’re both doing good things. Also look out for a new album from A Living Soundtrack. They’re not a new band, but they haven’t put out an album in years. I’ve heard it. It’s really good.
