It’s that time once again, as the countdown to the end of 2017 rapidly approaches we take a personal look back on familiar names, features and musicians’ best releases of the past 12 months. In what has been a crazy year of highs and lows it’s the releases that have pulled a lot of people through the year. Now in it’s 7th year, Circuit Sweet will be hosting takeovers from the featured artists/musicians/labels and promoters of the site with their personal top 5 releases of the year.
Continuing our annual end of year tradition we let our favourites take over the site to tell us the records that have made their end of year lists, their favourite events/gigs and what we can look forward to from them next year.
Our next take over comes from Worcester based 2 piece A Werewolf. We love these guys and we are so happy they are doing what they do best. Another rewarding year for the pair with the outstanding release of their debut album on vinyl ‘Wonderful Sound, Strange Shape’. Their new 12″ record is a long awaited album of ferocious and frantic orchestrations from the get-go, feedback, fuzz, outrageous samples, blast beats and more. One of our favourite duo’s have been touring relentlessly and made some incredible festival appearances earlier in the year. We hand over to Niall and Zack to find out more about their top albums of the year…
Top 5 releases of the year
Brutus – Burst.
Super awesome and have their own unique sound mixing post rock, black metal and hard rock.
Dying Fetus – Wrong One To Fuck With.
Trapped Under Ice – Heatwave.
Catchy heavy hardcore CHOONS.
Blanck Mass – Worldeater.
It’s like dancy industrial stuff ennit.
Gnaw – Cutting Pieces.
Just ‘orrible. Noise, Sludge. All their releases are just nasty.
The Menzingers – After The Party.
Classic ‘zinger anthems.
Brutus – Burst.
Quicksand – Interiors.
Music for indoors.
Iron Chic – You Can’t Stay Here.
Just good songs.
Childish Gambino – Awaken, My Love.
Just more good songs.
The best show you have played this year
Arctangent. Returning on a bigger stage with a bigger crowd resulted in bigger laffs. Doesn’t compare to anything else.
The best gig you have attended
Brutus at Arctangent. Just so so good.
Against Me! at the O2 Academy. One of the best bands around. Never released a bad album and all the songs are anthems.
Highlights of your year
Amazing UK tour and finally getting round to recording and releasing an album. Extremely proud to have a record that we worked hard on released and out there.
Artist/Band to watch for 2018
Sophie. Awesome producer off of the UK based PC music label. She released some great singles this year, my favourite being Ponyboy. Just weird and cool pop music.
Benjamin Todd of The Lost Dog Street Band. Great country singer.
Plans for the New Year
More touring, more quibbles and more recording!
A huge thank you to Zack and Niall, always a pleasure- thanks for releasing one of our most loved albums of 2017 too! Looking forward to more A Werewolf!
