After relocating to Leeds in 2015, critically acclaimed festival Beacons spawned Beacons Metro; A sprawling series of events across Leeds and the North that saw huge one off shows for the likes of Mac DeMarco and Everything Everything as well as stamping its authority as an ultimate tastemaker series, providing first Northern headline, and sell out, shows for Mura Masa, Nao and Loyle Carner, at the impressive, newly opened Headrow House.
Now in its second year, Beacons Metro is taking a much more concise form, trading in last years seasons-spanning programme for a much more focussed week long period in late October/early November. Flexing their curatorial muscles, festival programmers Super Friendz have brought together an eclectic line up of forward thinking events from the worlds of pop, experimental, psych, grime and techno.
Leading the first announcement is LA five piece Local Natives who recently broke a year of silence with a pop up show in San Francisco and the surprise release of their first new track in three years, Past Lives. Joining them is South London MC and producer Roots Manuva playing an intimate show at Belgrave Music Hall, acclaimed Leeds psych heroes Hookworms will co-curate a special night at Holy Trinity Church & Composer/Producer Anna Meredith who’s debut album, released on Mosh Moshi received glowing reviews as well as Best New Music on Pitchfork, with the taste making site describing her as “One of the most innovative minds in modern British music”. The eclectic line-up is bolstered by a debut northern show by WALL with more shows to be announced very soon.
Teaming up with official festival partners DICE, gig goers will be able to grab themselves very limited edition season passes guaranteeing them entry to all events in the series, as well as a few extra goodies. Exclusive pre-sale for all shows begins through DICE at 3pm on Friday 10th June with general tickets going on sale alongside the reveal of the rest of the line up at the start of July.
Head Booker, Ben Lewis says:
“Beacons Metro 2016 will be the culmination of an extremely exciting year of shows for Super Friendz. Having brought the likes of John Grant, Savages, Animal Collective, Explosions In The Sky, Polica, Diiv and Connan Mockasin to Leeds in 2016, the Beacons Metro series gives us the chance to bring together our some of our favourite, and some of the most exciting musicians around. With Beacons Metro we have the opportunity to hand-pick and curate extremely exciting bespoke events across our own venues Belgrave Music Hall and Headrow House, as well as taking over spaces like Holy Trinity Church, Howard Assembly rooms and the city’s universities, all brought together under one season ticket, or as individual shows if you wish to pick and choose.”
