Mercury Rev are excited to share the video for “Coming Up For Air,” the latest single from their new album The Light In You

Coming Up For Air” was shot in Houston and directed by Jonathan Caquette who is best known for his documentary Tarnation. He said of the video, “I am so proud and geeked out to …be able to do something for Mercury Rev, who I have adored for many years. The music video for “Coming Up For Air,” is just one part of a mildly bigger project to come…and it’s been one of the utmost coolest music video/films that I have ever had an opportunity to work on. The video as a whole is inspired by one part, my love for this made for TV movie from the 1970’s called The Bermuda Depths a

nd one part Sigmund Freud’s existential requiem, “On Transience.” I feel like the end result is on par to something kind of cool & ambiguous and hallucinatory-like.” Watch it below…

The Light In You (Bella Union) was released to world-wide critical acclaim in October and the band’s recent vinyl-only 7″ release of album track “Rainy Day Record” is in for a second pressing after selling out.

on The Light In You, the proverbial deserters throw themselves a celebratory homecoming after years in the wilderness.” Pitchfork

“With its ponderings on displacement and trying to find a path, The Light In You is a record that – like Beach House’s Depression Cherry – manages to navigate a route through sadness towards salvation.” – The Line of Best Fit, Album of the Week

“simple, direct songwriting, bathed in strings and choral vocals that go beyond being over the top in order to drive the message along – that sometimes the sheer power of music can pull you through.”  – Drowned In Sound

“Mercury Rev have amassed an impressive arsenal of metaphorical fauna. Elegance and delicacy seem to be the intended effect, as well as intelligence, both innate and hard-won with time” – The Quietus

(The Light In You) is clearly painstakingly and expertly crafted, yet still sounds effortless.” Under The Radar 8/10

Mercury Rev has made a very generous and personal record that is like a President’s smile, a friend’s yacht and a big European cathedral.” Mark Eitzel on Talkhouse

The Light In You is Mercury Rev’s first with Bella Union and is also the first with only Jonathan and Grasshopper at the controls, as scheduling conflicts and travel between the Catskills and Dave Fridmann’s Tarbox studio became too great to overcome. Surrounded by longtime friends such as engineer Scott Petito and bassist Anthony Molina, Jonathan and Grasshopper quickly found their stride recording themselves in their own basement studio as well as venturing out into the daylight to record tracks at some of their old haunts like NRS and White Light Studios. Ken Stringfellow was on hand to contribute backing vocals at his studio Son du Blé studios in Paris.
