Skye Portman Rad Releases

It’s that time once again, as the countdown to the end of 2015 quickly approaches we take a personal look back on familiar names, features and musicians’ best releases of the past 12 months. Circuit Sweet will be hosting takeovers from the featured artists of the site with their personal top 5 releases of the year.

Continuing our annual end of year tradition we let our favourites take over the site to tell us the records that have made their end of year lists, their favourite events/gigs and what we can look forward to from them next year.

Our next take over comes from a band who we seem to just bump into wherever we go- and that’s by no means a bad thing. We love Cardiff based quartet Esuna, and so should you. The band easily captivate their audience and each live set is unpredictable, abrasive and amusing. A must see. We hand over to Kieran Rees from Esuna to find out more about his year in music.

Top 5 releases of the year and a brief reason why …
Oh man, I’ve been absolutely terrible keeping up with new music this year. Here’s a few releases (mostly) from local bands in particular order. I’m terrible at reviews, just check them out!

The best show you have played this year and why…
I’d have to go for Worcester Music Festival by Surprise Attacks. The band above us on the bill had to pull out, so we became main support for Steve Strong. Nothing was mic’d up, so we got to crank everything. We ended up having a great turn out and the crowd quite liked us (which is always a plus).
The best gig you have attended and why…
For me it has to The Fall of Troy at ArcTanGent. I caught them in Cardiff back in 2010 when they had Frank on bass, not long before they broke up. It was so good to see them again, but with their original line up. I was at the front and I like to think I tore shit up. I can’t leave out American Football though. They were sooooo good and played every single one of their songs. I never thought I’d ever get to see them live. It felt like a dream.
Highlights of your year…
Our spring tour-that-wasn’t-really-a-tour. We played a few dates around the UK in some great venues, but unfortunately we had to return home after every show for work etc. Highlights include free pizza, driving back from Glasgow/Sheffield at midnight, falling asleep at the wheel, finally getting T-shirts made.
Artist/Band to watch for 2016…
Masts – Our good friends have their debut album out early 2016 on Jealous Lovers Club. Masts are a punk/post-hardcore band from Cardiff who play spicy riffs with a good few tasty time sigs thrown in for good measure. They always put on a fun live show. Annoy them by asking to play Ghost World as many times as possible.
Pipedream – Another Cardiff band with their debut album out early 2016. I’d like to congratulate them on getting it out on Dog Knights Productions. They have a very unique fleshed out sound reminiscent of The Smiths, but with their own twist. You can easily see their progression over the past few years and the future looks bright for them.
Plans for the New Year…
Our second EP should be out Q1 2016 hopefully with a big UK tour. More noise. More riffs. More cake.
Looking forward to hearing the new EP, thanks again Esuna!
