As the countdown to the end of 2014 quickly approaches we take a personal look back on familiar names, features and musicians’ best releases of the past 12 months. Circuit Sweet will be featuring the featured artists of the site with their personal top 5 releases of the year.
In our end of year special we let our favorites take over the site to tell us the records that have made their end of year lists, their favorite events/gigs and what we can look forward to from them next year.
Continuing our take over is a band we had the pleasure in welcoming to our online store earlier this year. Those Amongst Us Are Wolves have been described as creating ‘pysch infused soundscape wonderment’ April saw the release of their debut EP, ‘Chaotic Love Stories and Irrational Behaviour’. The band combines highs, lows, wonders, and edgy, pulsating uncertainties. If you love explosions in the sky, mono or giants, then this is a talent to follow.
Top 5 releases of the year.
Mark: I had to settle on some releases, but there are loads of other worthwhile releases from this year. I had to stop re-writing this list!
Audrey Fall – Mitau
Audrey Fall is a heavy post-rock band from Lativa. Inspiringly complex arrangements that are not contrived make this probably the best post-rock release of 2015.Listen
This Will Destroy You – Another Language
This Will Destroy You do not need any introduction if you are into post-rock. Another Language was a complete surprise; who would have thought they could improve on their back catalogue. Listen
Pallbearer – Foundations of Burden
I’ve not listened to any Doom Metal for some time. I had this on repeat for weeks. Listen to it. Listen
Her Name Is Calla – Navigator
Dark and emotional, read my review here Listen.
Swans – To Be Kind
To Be Kind is difficult to listen to, but utterly rewarding. Listen
The best show you have played this year
Our best show this year would be the album launch we ran for the release of This State Is Conscious. The gig was at The Tin in Coventry and we had support from OBE who, despite being engulfed in smoke from an oversized smoke machine, absolutely brought the house down with their set. We incorporated additional musicians to really bring the album to life with additional keys, a Santour and a Kamanche. It was also our last gig with our synth player Joshua, so closed a chapter of our story so far.
The best gig you have attended
A bit biased, but Chris and Mark have enjoyed putting on our own gigs under the moniker, Mindwarper. Coventry lacks a strong post-everything scene so we’ve started putting on shows quarterly to try and kick start one.
We’ve had sets from Degree of Arc, Constant Waves, Arctic Drones, Alright The Captain, Knees, Structures and Morocco Dave.
Artist/Band to watch for 2015
Chris: Future Islands.
Mark: Waking Aida
Plans for the New Year
Mark: Gigging is our main focus. We are currently booking for February and March, but will be looking to gig as much as possible throughout the year. We willing be testing new material out on the road and committing it to tape when we have decided how and when we want to release it.
A huge thank you to TAUAW we wish you all the best for the next year for the band.
