Confirming a work ethic that leaves most artists in the shade, ANE BRUN has announced details of a download-only live album recorded during her 2013 world tour. Songs Tour 2013 follows the release in 2013 of a Best Of collection, Songs 2003-2013, as well as a Rarities compilation – both of which celebrated the Swedish-based Norwegian’s ten years of recording – and is released today, November 25, 2014 by Brun’s own Balloon Ranger label.

A serial re-interpreter of both other people’s songs as well as her own, Brun undertook the tour that Songs Live documents with the aid of Swedish instrumental group Tonbruket. Formed by jazz artist Dan Berglund (previously part of the Esbjörn Svensson Trio), the band also features Andreas Werliin (of Wildbirds & Peacedrums), Martin Hederos (Soundtrack Of Our Lives) and guitarist Johan Lindström.

They have an amazing musical energy and virtuosity,Brun says, “and arranging my music with them really made my songs go to places they wouldn’t have found without them. I also brought Ola Hultgren as one of two drummers, who’s been a part of my band since a few years back, and the amazing Nina Kinert, my friend and colleague for many years, whose voice added that warm shimmering brilliance to the music.” It’s not the first time Brun and Kinert have collaborated: the Swedish musician formerly recorded with Brun in 2008 on Changing Of The Seasons, and subsequently performed with her on tour, appearing afterwards on 2009’s Live At Stockholm Concert Hall, Brun’s last live collection.

Songs Tour 2013 – a eighteen track, 92-minute album – was recorded on the final date of Brun’s round-the-world travels at a homecoming show in what she calls the “spacious yet intimate” surroundings of Stockholm’s prestigious Cirkus Theatre. Though she’s already released two live albums over the past decade, Brun explains that “the songs are dressed up in new garments by these magnificent musicians, and people asked me to record and release this tour, since it was a particularly interesting musical collaboration. Songs I’ve played a million times were transformed into something else, almost like remixes.

Songs Tour 2013 naturally leans on albeit dramatically revised versions of tracks from Brun’s acclaimed It All Starts With One, released in 2011. These include her collaboration with Jose Gonzales, ‘Worship’, an extended take on the furiously percussive ‘Do You Remember’, and the heartbreaking swell of ‘Undertow’. The album also features a further nine tracks gathered from across her catalogue, including fan favourites ‘My Lover Will Go’, ‘The Treehouse Song’, ‘To Let Myself Go’ and ‘Humming One Of Your Songs’. Additionally, there are three of Brun’s notable covers: a piano-led take on Cyndi Lauper’s ‘True Colours’, another trip back to the 1980s with an acoustic version of ‘Big In Japan’ (originally by Alphaville), and an astonishingly tender reading of Beyoncé’s ‘Halo’.

Songs Tour 2013 comes as Brun completes another tour during which she returned to her roots as a solo singer-songwriter. It also precedes a new album, due for release in the first half of 2015. Recorded with the same band that accompanies her on Songs Tour 2013, Brun divulges that it “feels like a natural step from It All Starts With One, and also from the live album coming out now. It has more beats and bass. I’ve never really used bass so much in my music, but on the next album this will be a much bigger part of the sound. The songs are quite varied and it’s a more extrovert album. It’s not a happy album, but it’s definitely relatively brighter than my former ones!”

Songs Tour 2013 captures Brun at the height of her talents, and is released exactly as it was recorded, with no Pro Tools polish, no corrections and no overdubs. It’s nonetheless a flawless reminder of an unforgettable experience for those who were there at the shows, and, for newcomers, it’s an unexpectedly magical showcase for her song-writing talents, as well as that remarkable voice of hers.

Ane is set to play a one-off show at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire on 10th December 2014. Tickets are available now.
