BBC Radio 1 favourites, Lonely The Brave, today release the video for their next single ‘Backroads,’ featured on 2013’s‘Backroads EP’ and taken from their debut album ‘The Day’s War,’ to be released September 1st. Video director, Greg Davenport (Band of Skulls, Steve Mason) explained his vision for the project…
“When I first heard the track I instantly felt that the video had to have a feeling of freedom and escape. As it happens I’d been following the Euromaidan movement in Ukraine very closely since it started in November, and I was actually there in Maidan Square, Kiev on NYE singing along with 200,000 people, full of hope – only to then watch in horror at the violence that was unleashed after returning to London. We all saw the images to some degree or another and at times they were nothing short of apocalyptic.
I thought about these people after the revolution had succeeded and that clearly was the catalyst for the idea. Fresh from such a violent experience but hoping for a brighter future and for the time being at least just wanting to escape and feel free. This image of a group of longboarders weaving through the countryside seemed to synch so perfectly with the guitar riff and the whole vibe of the track.”
Shot amidst the backdrop of the current political climate in Ukraine, the video reflects on the themes of loss and liberation that feature in the lyrics on ‘Backroads.’ Starting on the streets of Kiev, amongst the ruined buildings and relief camps, moving gradually to the freedom of the idyllic Ukrainian countryside and a long abandoned quarry, David Jakes lyrics soar with the refrain “I’ll be the sky, and you be the bird” as the group of young Ukrainian natives find peace in the calm of the evening outside the chaos of the city.
The Cambridge quintet, who recently played stellar sets at Download and Glastonbury festivals have had what they will surely look back on as one of the most important 6 months in their career to date. Recently signing to Columbia Records, home to artists such as Daft Punk andBruce Springsteen, the band have also headlined the Wednesday of Radio 1 Rocks week as well as getting set to release their already critically acclaimed debut album The Days War. With sets still planned at Reading and Leeds festivals amongst other UK festival dates, a headline show at London’s Dingwalls on September 4th and a string of European festival dates to come, notably supporting Neil Young atLokerse Feesten in Belgium, Lonely The Brave’s star looks set to continue to rise.
